Our Mission

The mission of J.R. Baker Elementary School is to provide a safe, supportive environment where students can learn and excel by ensuring that appropriate curriculum, instruction, time, and other required resources are provided.

History of J. R. Baker Elementary School

J. R. Baker Elementary School, located at 1301 Hampshire Pike, Columbia, Tennessee opened in the fall of 1960.  J. R. Baker School was named for J. Rufus Baker, who was school superintendent in Maury County for 33 years. In April, 1971, J. R. Baker Elementary, along with Brown Elementary, became the first Maury County Schools to become SACS (Southern Association of Schools and Colleges) accredited. 

 In April, 1975, heavy rainfall caused water to collect around the building and subsequently flood the inside of the building with eighteen inches of water.  As this occurred very rapidly during the night, extensive damage was sustained.  An inestimable loss of library books, texts, and teaching materials resulted. 

Five principals have served Baker School since its opening in 1960.  They are:  James W. Richardson (1960-1973), William (Bill) Bowers (1973-1980), Eloise Cheatham (1980-2000), Della H. Matlock, (2000 to 2016), and Jon-Micah Clanton (2016).

We currently serve approximately 325 students ranging from pre-kindergarten through fourth grade.  Our school has 24 teachers and 10 educational assistants.   Among the number opportunities for learning include music, physical education, library, computer, guidance and several special education services.  Baker has a School Resource Officer assigned to our school.  New this year, The Boy's & Girl's Club will be offering before and after school service.
